just in case you didn’t know, I moved to London, England. I’ve been here for just over 3 weeks.

it’s been my dream to live in this country since I could remember, mostly because anything I’ve ever liked has come from here.

I have not yet decided if I like it. The weather is confusing to me. In the sun, everything is beautiful and historical; in the rain, everything is shit.

It’s been raining a lot.

In point form (since that’s my specialty), here are some observations on London.

no one is fat like I thought they would be.
there are a lot of blondes with distinguished noses.
everyone wears high heels and dresses nice. all the jeans are skinny; the flare is either not cool yet, or isn’t cool anymore.
everything sounds like an emergency. the subway door closes, and it’s a high pitched beeping as if an alarm’s been set off. when you cross the street in Canada, there’s a pleasant chirping noise to let blind people know it’s okay. Here, there’s nothing about the sound that’s okay. also, the sirens are low and slow (lethargic, really) as if they don’t really care if they save your life. Canada’s sirens are keen and ready for action. Good thing Dustin Hoffman lives here.
the museums are free, so that’s pretty awesome. everyone in the paintings vaguely resemble all the blondes with distinguished noses.
the sidewalks are uneven
the indian food really is the best.
the grocery stores have everything made for you. it’s amazing.
there’s a place called Tooting; there’s Upper Tooting, Tooting High Street, and Tooting Bec Commons. clearly the brits have a sense of humour.

It is easiest for me to write about what I know. I love Dwell magazine and fantasizing over furniture I can’t afford (yet) but the reality is I have to live within my means and I want my space to look good in the meantime!

My first apartment on my own was a gem I got through a lease transfer ad on Craigslist. If you have never found an apartment through a lease transfer, I highly suggest you start. This modest four and a half (on paper) was in the middle of centre-sud and was super cheap. I visited, saw beyond the horrifying paint job, and took it on the spot.

This was my first ever attempt in revamping my apartment to make it my own and I’ve had that itch ever since. Maybe this can inspire you to do the same. Most of the pieces I found for the apartment were bought second-hand or free!

Hear Me Lord - George Harrison

I won’t lie. I’m an extreme iPod shuffler. Unless I have a specific album that I want to pay attention to or I’m catching up on podcasts, my iPod is pretty much always on shuffle. I do it because I like to think it’s a way for the music gods to speak to me in case they need to warn me or comfort me or slap some sense into me.

This George Harrison one’s been coming up a lot. I have my favourite tracks on All Things Must Pass (“Wah-Wah”, anyone?) but this one is working its way up. It’s so full of longing and sadness and remorse, which would normally be reserved for a lover, but this song’s all about God being everywhere. Heavy stuff.

This ‘ooooooh ooooh”-ing in this song reminds me so much of a Halloween song we used to sing in elementary about a woman finding a skeleton in her closet. The only thing I can remember are the ooooh’s, but I remember singing it while walking through the cemetary by my house with my mom. Either that’s true, or it’s my mind’s way of making the song seem scarier in my head. Do you ever feel like your memories aren’t true?

Vogue Renting

I’m really sick today, so I stayed home from work. But instead of lazing and watching Degrassi High, which in retrospect would have been awesome, I started a new blog called Vogue Renting.

The purpose is to build up a collection of things that may someday make me a desirable candidate to work at an interior design magazine (since this is my dream), but I also just like making my apartment comfy and pretty and I want to brag about it.
